5 Minutes
Theory: Two people meet for the first time. Generally, within the first 5 minutes these two people already know whether they like each other. This isn’t fair to either person, but it’s a byproduct of the manner in which the human brain works. As people we rely on our past experiences to predict what will happen in the future. For example, I’m driving home from work and I expect the oncoming traffic to stay in their lane because that is how it always worked in the past. Similarly, these two hypothetical people see traits and mannerisms in each other that reflect their past interactions with different people; thus, within 5 minutes these two people believe they know how to act and react together. When two people meet and solidify their first impressions, vary rarely are they wrong… or believe themselves to be wrong. Is this because human intuition is that accurate, or is it because “people see what they wanna see and hear what they wanna hear, dig.”? It’s hard to rise above the preconceived notions that dictate the color of shades through which we see the world. To take of those shades, is to come closer to an enlightened existence.
