The Letter
I made Nonie cry. It was a good cry, though. On Memorial Day I went to visit Grandpa’s final resting place with SSDiabolique and Deedlit(LC). After paying our respects we wandered the cemetery, looking at gaudy headstones and enjoying the 80+ degree weather. I noticed some headstones had fresh flowers and candles with letter from friends and family secured to the site. Others were desolate and forgotten with weeds and vines encroaching on the grave, obscuring the headstone. I even pulled some weeds from a particularly forlorn grave in an attempt to honor the anonymous spirit of the deceased. Taking a cue from the well-tended graves I wrote a Father’s Day letter to Grandpa and taped it to his headstone. A lot of people saw it (aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.) but nobody opened it until yesterday. Nonie took it off the headstone and opened it. Last night she called me and thanked me as she choked back her tears. I’m glad that my small gesture made her so happy.
