Mythic MayhemWe’re on a role with these mythic sword & sorcery movies. Last night we consumed Jason and the Argonauts and this weekend we shall feast upon Lord of the Rings (which MK lent me in exchange for Dude, Where’s My Car?). It’s fun watching a string a movies in the same genre; we did the same with spaghetti westerns a couple of months ago… the entire Clint Eastwood’s Man With no Name Series followed by Unforgiven. Anyway, Jason rocked the Casbah hardcore. I remember seeing this movie dozens of times on video or network TV (that’s right, those “Sunday Matinee” presentations), but I don’t remember it being this exceptional. That stop-action animation stuff is sweet. It’s amazing what they did with the tools available at the time. Screw this digital effects revolution; I want to see a renaissance of stop-action. We’ll see if I’m still on a stop-action soapbox after re-watching Lord of the Rings… my feeble mind is so easily swayed by shiny objects in cool packaging. As I alluded to before, I’d like to complete this mythic extravaganza with The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, which is the precursor to Jason which is to precursor to Clash of the Titans. The special effects genius behind these three movies is Ray Harryhausen and he gives fairly insightful interviews on the Jason and CotT DVDs. This is one of those few DVD extras that is worth the plastic its encoded on.Degenerate the faithful with that crazy Casbah sound. |
