Killing Time
At this point, I’m just killing time waiting for
Mountain States VW to call me up with tidings of my Golf. I’ve completed my shit-load of work and I can skip tomorrow with a clear conscious. I’ve spent ten straight hours here at work and I’m ready to go home. Where are you
Mountain States? God, ten hours seams so long now that I’m at a government job. Back in the day when I was working hardcore environmental remediation ten hours was considered a short day. Damn, I’ve been wussified. Here I am sitting on my candy ass in a climate controlled and ergonomically correct environment and I still complain.
About half an hour ago, the mechanic called. I was primed to bolt out of work as soon as they informed me that my car was roaring to go. Not quite yet. They called to ask me if I’ve had any difficulties with the locks. Ha! When I stick the key in the driver’s side door I end up pulling out the entire tumbler assembly. The passenger’s side isn’t quite as bad, but you can’t lock or unlock it from the outside either. When all the doors are locked on the Golf, the only entrance is the hatchback. The only time we lock the doors is when we go on extended trips, and then when we return I pop the trunk so that El-Sea can climb over the seats to unlock the doors. We haven’t locked the doors on that car since the window was smashed and our stereo was ganked on October 2, 2001. I only know the exact date because it was the morning of SSDiaboliques 23rd birthday. Awesome birthday present, huh? The sad part is that six months later someone shattered the window again in a week attempt to steal something of value.
To the fucker who tried to rip us off last April:
You idiot, the piece of shit car wasn’t even locked! Did you even think to try the door instead of putting me out $100 for a new window? Why the hell are you even breaking into a 1996 VW Golf, much less a VW Golf with a child seat? Yeah, we’re obviously rolling in the dough ‘cause we’re sportin’ a luxury hatchback with no rims. Fucking gonorrhea squirtin’ retard!
Anyway…
Yeah, I obviously know the locks don’t work in my own car that I drive every day. Then the mechanic advises me to get the problem fixed before winter because the passenger’s side lock is probably close to busting. Apparently, he didn’t try that door because it’s screwed too.
Here’s my own private Visa commercial:
~ Oil Change: $50
~ New power steering fluid reservoir free of battery corrosion: $150
~ Two new oxygen sensors: $450
~ Watching my check engine light flicker on as I park in front of my apartment tonight: PRICELESS!
Call me jaded, but I know that sinister light is not going way until it has permanently burned itself into my retinas. Then everything I see will be overlaid with a ghost outline of an engine block dissected by a lightening bolt. I will be ecstatic if $650 seriously turns off that demon light for good.
I love the symmetry here: $650 for car repairs and $650 for El-Sea’s teeth. It’s all good; I have a plan. I’ll drain my savings, I’ll cut back my monthly 401k contribution, and I’ll return all the Christmas presents we’ve bought. Following this plan I should be able to pay of the Visa by the end of February 2003.
Screw this I’m calling the damn VW dealer to see if my Golf is ready.
