Mecha-EL-SeaI know I’ve mentioned the probability of getting El-Sea a ps2 controller for Christmas. I couldn’t contain myself and Friday after work I made a small detour to purchase the controller. El-Sea hugged me big time when I gave it to her. As she looked at her new controller she creased her soft 4-year old forehead and said, “I wanted purple.” That’s gratitude for ya. SSDiabolique, El-Sea, and I triple-teamed Gauntlet: Dark Legacy and hacked up zombies for two solid hours. At first I was thoroughly annoyed playing with El-Sea. She was supposed to be born with the inherent ability to whoop it up videogame style. That’s what her invoice said anyway: One child. Girl. Smart to the point of irritating. Pre-recorded question, “WHY?” Capable of obliterating all videogame opponents. Once I gave up on trying to get anything accomplished I started to have fun. Character advancement and unlocking new levels? Screw ‘em. Just run around and smash stuff. Woo-Hoo!Then on Saturday I heard El-Sea shout these words: “Mommy, I’m killing the cop!” Yep, she was playing Grand Theft Auto 3. She just picked up the controller and started fiddling around Saturday night after her older friend, Lucy, went home in mid-game. Let me put this in perspective. In GTA3 killing a thug, gangbanger, hooker, or any other civilian is easy, two hits and they’re dead. Whack-smack-THUD! Cops on the other hand are aggressive fighters who don’t fall so easily; you have to rumble for two or three rounds and then give ‘em a couple extra kicks after they hit the ground. I almost busted out some N.W.A. to celebrate the occasion, but then I realized I’m a middle-class white male and, therefore, I have no particular beef with the five-oh. Now I’ve got a little videogame fiend on my hands. I try to entice her with books, puzzles, shenry-style tea parties, coloring, and all sorts of fun crap but she wants her ps2. This has turned out to be one of those mixed blessings. Fuck the police comin straight from the underground… |
