The Holiday Approaches
After a spot of Sunday morning coffee with Tiff and the Anti-Shenry, I went to buy a Christmas tree. This is the first Christmas tree I’ve had prior to moving out on my own in 1996. Why do I embrace the Christmas tree convention for 2002? SSDiabolique’s mom and grandma are staying with us from December 17 to January 3. That’s eighteen days worth of five people crammed into a tiny two-bedroom apartment. I’m scared.

It’s a fake tree, one that compresses nicely into a sturdy storage box for the other 48 weeks of the year. The tree came pre-strung with tiny colored light bulbs and pre-arranged with wisps of color morphing fiber optics. We spent the majority of Sunday decorating the tree and wrapping presents, all the while sneaking peeks at the Broncos/Chargers game. Speaking of which, after last night’s overtime loss I’m pondering dumping the Broncos for a team with more consistency, like the Cincinnati Bengals. At least I know the Bengals will lose and I won’t be stressing out about possible playoff births. …Okay, I’m just being emotional; I gotta let it go.

I sat cross-legged in the middle of the living room floor surrounded by scraps of vibrant wrapping paper, with bags of presents behind me, a muted football game in front of me, a glowing tree on my left, and a finished stack of wrapped presents to my right. As I wrapped a pair of Neuticles for Benz-oh, I paused to sip from my warm mug of tangy cider and all of the sudden the Christmas vibe hit me. I even got a wee bit excided like back when I was a kid.

And so begins the holiday season.
