3YR
Exactly three years ago I went on my first date with Silver Queen. She had just returned form a party that had been grinding on her nerves and found my message on her machine. She called me back and updated me on her current condition, which was tired and headachy. I took that "headachy" bit as a preemptive "no" to my unasked "do you wanna do something?" Much to my surprise, after talking a bit more on the phone we decided to go out and chill.

I suggested we hit a coffee house and chitchat over a comforting mug of coffee. (Little did I know that she disliked coffee.) Not being familiar with her side of town, I drove around mindlessly looking for an open café or a Starbucks. Apparently, coffee isn't a huge commodity at 9:00PM and every place we drove past was closed. We finally settled for a dilapidated I.H.O.P. on the corner of Colfax and Wadsworth.

Silver Queen talked about the party she just came from that was bumming her out and she told me that the last thing she wanted to do was be someplace loud and boisterous. I think she was trying to alleviate my self-conscious doubts. For god's sake, we were in a piss-poor diner with the intention of merely drinking coffee, and she didn't even like coffee. I was, indeed, worried about this date. We weren't jamming the night away at some club. We weren't toasting glasses of red wine as some ritzy Italian restaurant. We weren't laughing it up half way to drunk at a trendy brewpub. We were sitting at a grimy table, me with a bottomless pot of coffee and her with a tall bubbly Coke.

Three years later, I guess I can say that it all worked out. Out of that tiny candid date came a long-term committed relationship.
