Classic Rock?
Does anybody know the exact date that Guns N’s Roses was proclaimed classic rock? This isn’t new; I’ve been hearing Gn’R on the local classic rock radio stations for several years now. The Use Your Illusion (I & II) albums were released in 1991. When the dj spins November Rain or Civil War is he cognate of the fact that these tracks are a product of the 1990s and clock in at a mere 12-years-old?

Hair bands like Poison, Warrant, Bon Jovi, and Whitesnake are getting heavy play time at the classic rock stations, too. Don’t get me wrong; hair bands are near and dear to my heart. The upper corner of my left ventricle is reserved solely for hair bands and power ballads. I’m just a tad concerned over this infusion of 80’s and 90’s music into classic rock. What’s next? The Go-Go’s We Got the Beat segueing into Black Sabbath’s War Pigs? Dear lord, no. I love 80’s cheese also, but Cyndi Lauper and Billy Ocean are confined to a separate corner of my heart in the left atrium… see, hair bands and 80’s cheese are restricted to separate compartments of the heart.

For now, I’ll assuage myself with the idea that classic rock is not simply age based, but flavor based as well. This why the newest Tom Petty single will always get immediate airplay on classic rock radio and why the oldest Bee Gees’ single will never qualify. I find it scary that grunge, with its guitar driven melodies, has a classic rock aftertaste. The day that Pearl Jam is baptized into classic rock is the day that I feel old. (book)Mark my words: we, as a society, are mere months away from Alive bursting into the classic rock scene. I just want to warn you before it happens, so that you won’t hydroplane into a ditch when you’re cruising home from work in the November rain and Soundgarden’s Black Hole Sun hits you upside your head from the classic rock radio station.
