auditions
The NFL season it at its halfway point and my Denver Broncos have proven themselves unremarkably average with a 5-4 record. There is still a realistic chance that they can sneak into the playoffs as a wildcard, but I’m not counting on it. This week the Broncs have a bye, which gives me the opportunity to actively audition for backup teams that will keep me entertained through December and January. I’m not giving up on Denver, I’m just preparing for a worst-case scenario.

First allow me begin by excluding playoff contenders that I just can’t bring myself to cheer for:

Miami: NO. I can’t root for Brian Griese anymore. He makes you believe and then he shatters your trust like clay pigeons on a Texas rifle range.

Indianapolis: Nothing personal, but they are an obvious choice for a Super Bowl birth.

KC: According to the unwritten NFL code of conduct, I cannot cheer division rivals.

And here are some teams that tickle my fancy enough to make me pay special attention this weekend:

Cincinnati: Sure, their 3-5 record sucks more than the Broncos’, but they are only 2 games behind Baltimore’s 5-3. With a bit o’ luck Cincinnati could slip into the playoffs as the AFC North’s divisional champs. The Bengals would be the ultimate underdog through the playoffs. Plus, I really like the Bengals’ orange and black striped helmets.

Tennessee: Decent record and I have no personal grudges against any of the players.

Seattle: The Seahawks are doing alright. I used to love having them in the AFC West. Man, those were the good old days when the Broncos used to trounce on them regularly. I’m happy to see them succeeding (especially since they are no longer division rivals). It’s like watching a loser second-cousin turn his life around. I even recognize some of the names on the roster, due to my pseudo-familiarity with the team.

Tryouts and auditions begin Sunday, so go out there and play ball! (And let me know if you have any suggestions.)
