Happy New Year From The 'Hood
I’m not one to put a lot of stock in omens, but I must confess I was a little disturbed when I woke up on January 1, 2004 and discovered some idiot (more than likely drunk) sideswiped our parked car in the wee hours of the morning. Overall, all I was surprised at how little damage was done to out VW. The rear fender is a mess of dings and scratches, the rear hubcap was shattered in a billion pieces, and the side view mirror was obliterated. All in all, the car is still functional; it’s just a little uglier now.

The car incident --by itself-- wasn’t really that disturbing, but what I saw further down our block was rather unexpected as well. The intersection was blocked off with yellow police line (Police Line Do Not Cross) and a fleet of cop cars, SWAT vans, and news crews were making quite a commotion.

Homicide. Police standoff. Tear gas. Fifteen arrested. …less than a block away.

Aside from that, New Years was fun. Sherry and I met up with neko, we went out for dim sum, hit Ken’s party for a couple hours, and then skipped outside to enjoy the fireworks over downtown Denver. I went to bed feeling happy and satisfied.

Assume for a moment that I do believe in signs. I went to bed New Year’s morning feeling happy and satisfied, but I woke up later that afternoon feeling embittered and disturbed. 2004 is going to be a fucking roller coaster of insanity. Thankfully, I’m not one to put a lot of stock in omens.
